Narrow fabric elastic tapes are essential components in intimate apparel to provide support, hold the garment in the right position, create a finished edge, and give aesthetic effects.Elongation, modulus, durability, handfeel, and aesthetics are the key criteria in the selection of narrow fabric elastic tapes for intimate apparel.The development of narrow fabric elastic tapes is discussed in terms of their functional and aesthetic aspects. The purpose of this chapter is to provide additional information for designers in their search for narrow fabric elastic tape and give them the means to incorporate these resources into their designs.
The component which performs the actual stretching is made of either rubber or a synthetic material such as spandex; this stretching component is then covered with polyester, cotton, nylon, or a combination of these or other fibers which allow it to be attached to clothing. High-quality elastic is able to be stretched to twice its original length and then return to its unflexed state without showing appreciable wear.
Elastics may be either braided, knitted, woven, or transparent.
Knitted elastic is considered soft, lightweight, and quite strong. Warp-knitted elastic tapes are also called crochet elastic tapes. It does not narrow when stretched, and piercing it with a needle does not affect its ability to return to its original shape. It is considered practical for lightweight fabrics. Knitted elastic is made by knitting the fibers together. Knitted elastic tends to be softer than braided or woven elastic, and it retains its width when stretched. It also works well even when pierced by needles, so it's a good choice for sew on applications. It rolls more than woven elastic, but less than braided elastic. Since this elastic is softer, it's suitable for light to midweight fabrics, but doesn't have the grip needed for heavier fabrics. With knit elastic, I may cut the elastic slightly shorter than the finished measurement in order to have it grip properly, particularly when I use it for waistbands or bra bands.
